What is The Big Read?

A project of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) in partnership with Arts Midwest designed to “restore reading to American culture.” People in a community commit to reading the same book, and can participate in scores of related activities.

Where is it happening?

In communities on seven Maine islands – Mount Desert Island, Frenchboro, Swans Island, Little Cranberry Island, Deer Isle, Stonington, and Isle au Haut.

Why is it coming here?

Because it’s fun! And because Island Readers & Writers, in partnership with the Northeast Harbor Library, received the only NEA grant in Maine to host The Big Read, one of only five in all of New England.

Who is it for?

Everyone – especially you. We aim to have 1,500 people of all ages and walks of life read the book and join in some of the fun activities we have planned.

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain

What kind of activities will be offered?

Films, art projects and exhibits, books discussions, theater performances, lectures, concerts, classes, public readings, and even logrolling lessons in a pool!

How much will it cost me to participate?

Nothing. Free copies of the book will be distributed to participating students through their schools, and to the general public between Jan. 4 and 12 at their local libraries. All programs associated with The Big Read are free.

When does it happen?
