October: Bass Harbor Memorial Library featured artwork of Tremont Consolidated School fifth and sixth grade students who read Charlotte’s Web.

November:  Bass Harbor Memorial Library sponsored naturalist Lynn Havsall for a visit to Tremont Consolidated School where she presented an interactive program on spiders for students in Grades K – 2.

IRW Volunteers at MDI public libraries: During the weeks leading up to Melissa Sweet’s visit, local IRW volunteers are teaming up with MDI libraries to offer art and reading programs for children focused on Melissa’s vibrant, extensive bibliography.

November 17, 9:00-9:45: Lake collage project at NEH Library with MDES third graders

November 18, 1:00-1:45: Chalk web drawings at NEH Library with MDES fifth graders
November 22, 11:00-12:00: Collage craft at SWHPL with local homeschoolers

November 28: 
Meet Melissa! Author presentation, book sale and signing at Pemetic Elementary School’s gym in Southwest Harbor at 7pm.
November 29: School Visit Day at Tremont Consolidated School. Melissa will give a presentation to 3rd-8th graders at the start of the day, then visit individual classrooms to lead writing workshops and view student projects inspired by her book. In preparation for Melissa’s visit: kindergarten students are learning about Charlotte’s Web and spiders; first and second graders are reading Melissa Sweet’s picture books and E.B. White’s Stuart Little, and are exploring the collage art form; third and fourth graders are reading Melissa’s books; students in grades 5-6 are creating Melissa-style shadow boxes in art class, and are studying biographies and limericks in their ELA class; and students in grades 7-8 are researching E.B. White and his connection to the Blue Hill Fair.

December 13: Bass Harbor Memorial Library has arranged for Steve White, E.B. White’s grandson, to visit Tremont Consolidated School and talk about his grandfather with students in Grades 3-5.

January 12: Poet and COA professor Candice Stover will lead a discussion for adults of E.B. White’s essays at the Bass Harbor Memorial Library, 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.

February/March: Book discussion of The Story of Charlotte’s Web by Michael Sims, at the Bass Harbor Memorial Library.

Spring 2017: Anne Dalton, guidance counselor at Tremont Consolidated School, will take a group of junior high students for a tour of Brooklin Boatyard to talk about employment opportunities in the boatbuilding business.
