IRW brings Maine authors and illustrators to Maine children in their schools and communities. Sometimes we also bring in writers and artists from outside the state, and we frequently draw upon the expertise of others within the community, including storytellers, scientists, and historians.

What do some of our author partners have to say about IRW?

"The school visits that I do with Island Readers and Writers are among my favorite events all year. The places we visit are so beautiful and we are welcomed with such special warmth and enthusiasm by the schools and communities. At all three of my recent visits, the schools had done amazing projects to prepare. They made use of the materials IRW provided and even took things from my books outward into their own communities. To me that's one of the best things about our visits: we help introduce kids to their own communities in a way that enriches everyone." -Cynthia Lord

"Teaming up with IRW has been a dream! I’ve always loved doing author visits, but working with IRW has launched those visits into a whole other realm. I love it when a teacher tells me that one of my books engaged a student who typically does not like to read. During my IRW author visits, I hear this frequently, which I attribute in part to IRW’s intensive prep work and the school-wide buzz about the book." - Ellen Potter
