A Summer Morning in Maine

On Thursday, August 11, 2011, 117 IRW supporters of all ages gathered for “A Summer Morning in Maine” program and brunch at Cape Farm  in Seal Cove. The setting was stunning with views of Moose and Hardwood Islands and Isle au Haut in the distance.  Folks came by boat from Frenchboro and Islesford and from as far away as Vinalhaven. We gathered under a great white tent with a festive green stripe and room for twelve tables. Each table represented an island or “inland” island IRW visits. The tables were decorated with blue and white flowers and a centerpiece made of orange paper stenciled with boats and islands. It was an inspirational and fun event.

Our event focused on IRW’s three programs; Island Book and Author, Friends Over Books and Community outreach. Special guest speakers included Ashley Bryan, Cynthia Lord and Rebekah Raye. Ashley started us off with a few inspirational poems. We all happily repeated each stanza attempting to match the enthusiasm and intonation of our leader. Ashley also met with the children and taught them a poem that they later recited. Meanwhile, Cynthia and Rebekah spoke to adult members of the audience about their experiences with Island Readers & Writers. A brunch was served too. Lots of blueberry pancakes were eaten coupled with lively conversation under the big top.  The energy and enthusiasm for Island Readers & Writers was evident and heartwarming.

Jan Coates, Executive Director of Island Readers & Writers announced that they had received the only Big Read grant from the National Endowment for the Arts in the State of Maine. The book selection is The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.  Participating islands:  Mount Desert, Deer Iles-Stonington and their respective outer islands of Isle au Haut, Frenchboro, Swan’s and the Cranberry Isles.  The Big Read will be held from January 12 to February 11, 2012.
