IRW to kick off spring programming in Washington County with three new schools

Island Readers & Writers is kicking off its spring programming in Washington County with three new schools! Charlotte Elementary, Pembroke Elementary, and Edmunds Consolidated School will be participating in some upcoming IRW author/illustrator visits.

Charlotte Elementary (a three-room school) is joining Pembroke Elementary during a visit with Kim Ridley and Rebekah Raye in March, where the author and illustrator duo will present on their book “The Secret Pool.” Pembroke Elementary is the perfect place – they have vernal pools in their own backyard! If the snow has melted by then, we’ll take a peek and identify what kinds of creatures inhabit a vernal pool in the early spring.

Kim Ridley writes in The Secret Pool, “A great way to find a vernal pool is to listen for wood frogs in very early spring. They sound like quacking ducks!” Wood frogs survive the winter by freezing nearly solid and thawing as the temperatures rise in spring.

We’re also piloting another interschool program with Edmunds Consolidated School and Whiting Village School; together they will learn how to build a story, create characters, and perform digital illustration from Maine author/illustrator Ryan Higgins.

We are excited to bring talented, passionate authors and illustrators to these schools, and help cultivate reading communities among students from neighboring towns!
