Swan’s Island and Frenchboro were in for a rare treat on October 2nd and 4th, and no, it had nothing to do with Halloween! Island Readers & Writers partnered up with best-selling author Kathryn Lasky and Chewonki’s Traveling Naturalist program to bring together a multi-tiered experience around owls. Emma Balazs from Chewonki provided background and insight into the owls of Maine with real-life wings, pellets, and…OWLS! A screech, barred, and great-horned owl brought gasps of surprise and delight as they sat on Emma’s arm, occasionally hooting for effect. A truly unforgettable highlight.
On October 4th, we returned to Swan’s Island, with Frenchboro joining us, bringing acclaimed author of the Guardians of Ga’hoole series, Kathryn Lasky and her illustrious husband, Chris Knight. Kathryn talked to the students about being an author, the research that goes into writing fiction and non-fiction books, as well as her inspiration and thought process during the writing of the Guardians series. She also talked about her non-fiction books with a focus on, get ready…spiders. The kids were equally fascinated and creeped out! To cap it all off, they all received their very own copy of The Capture which Kathryn personally signed, and got to share their terrific owl essays and models.
Many thanks to Kim Colbeth and Swan’s Island for hosting us, Ashley and Miss Becky from Frenchboro, and of course our special guests Kathryn and Emma for making this event truly spectacular.
