IRW’s “The Art of the Picture Book” public program was held at the Henry D. Moore Public Library in August 2018. This free, engaging child and family program featured award-winning Maine author and illustrator Chris Van Dusen and Courtney Waring, director of education from the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art in Amherst, Mass. “The Art of the Picture Book” was a two-day program for children, families, caregivers and educators in Steuben and its surrounding communities.

Throughout this program, children and adults alike experienced how words and pictures come together to tell a story and rouse a sense of curiosity and wonder. Additionally, parents and those that read to and with children learned strategies for deepening the reading experience by viewing the picture book as an art form.

Families were invited to a potluck supper on Friday, followed by a presentation by Courtney Waring, director of education at The Carle, on “The Whole Book Approach” to exploring all elements of picture books, from hidden treasures beneath a book jacket and more. The next day, Van Dusen will read aloud from his book, “The Circus Ship.”
