In April 2019, Island Readers & Writers brought author/illustrator Sophie Blackall from Brooklyn, N.Y., to kids in coastal Maine with a multidisciplinary program around her 2019 Caldecott Medal-winning picture book, “Hello Lighthouse.”
Sophie spent a week with IRW, visiting more than 325 kids from Beals Elementary School, Lubec Consolidated School, Whiting Village School, Swan’s Island Elementary School and Tremont Consolidated School.
Kids from these five schools visited local lighthouses in their communities, explored maritime and lighthouse history, created art and writing projects inspired by “Hello Lighthouse” and more. Read more about Sophie's school visits here, here and here!
Sophie shared how she came to write and illustrate picture books, participate in intimate writing / art workshops and personally-inscribed a copy of “Hello Lighthouse” for each student.
