Island Readers & Writers is thrilled to bring author/illustrator Sophie Blackall from Brooklyn, N.Y., to kids in coastal Maine with a multidisciplinary program around her 2018 Caldecott Medal-winning picture book, “Hello Lighthouse.”
Sophie will spend the week of April 22-26 with IRW, visiting more than 325 kids from Beals Elementary School, Lubec Consolidated School, Whiting Village School, Swan’s Island Elementary School and Tremont Consolidated School.
Ahead of Sophie’s visit, kids from these five schools will visit local lighthouses in their communities, explore maritime and lighthouse history, create art and writing projects inspired by “Hello Lighthouse” and more. We can’t wait to see what the teachers and students come up with!
During Sophie’s visits, kids will have the opportunity to hear from Sophie about how she came to write and illustrate picture books, participate in intimate writing / art workshops and receive a personally-inscribed copy of “Hello Lighthouse.”
Following her school visits in Lubec and Swan's Island, we welcome you to join us for a chance to meet Sophie!
