Hello Lighthouse

In April 2019, Island Readers & Writers brought author/illustrator Sophie Blackall from Brooklyn, N.Y., to kids in coastal Maine with a multidisciplinary program around her 2019 Caldecott Medal-winning picture book, “Hello Lighthouse.”

Sophie spent a week with IRW, visiting more than 325 kids from Beals Elementary School, Lubec Consolidated School, Whiting Village School, Swan’s Island Elementary School and Tremont Consolidated School.

Kids from these five schools visited local lighthouses in their communities, explored maritime and lighthouse history, created art and writing projects inspired by “Hello Lighthouse” and more. Read more about Sophie's school visits here, here and here!

Story Contest Winners

Seventh and eighth graders who participated in the program were invited to enter a creative short story contest, with the grand prize of an overnight stay at Little River Lighthouse in Cutler, generously donated by the American Lighthouse Foundation. We received 21 wonderful submissions from students at Lubec Consolidated School, Swan's Island Elementary School and Whiting Village School. And the winners are...

First Place: "A Fire at Lubec Channel Light" by Eli Appleby, Lubec Consolidated School

Runner-up: "The Assistant" by Owen Leavitt, Whiting Village School

We can't wait to see what these writers come up with in the future!
