IRW Community Book Club with Gary Schmidt

The IRW Community Book Club was a fall 2019 program open to fifth and sixth graders living on MDI, attending MDIRSS schools, homeschoolers and a parent, guardian or other adult. Each parent/ child pair received two copies of Gary Schmidt's latest middle-grade novel, Pay Attention, Carter Jones, to read and discuss together at home.

The goal of the free, month-long program was to get kids excited about reading outside of the classroom along with a parent, guardian or other engaged adult, and participating in fun, book-related activities with the opportunity to meet Newbery Honor author Gary Schmidt!

About the IRW Community Book Club

Thirty-two parent/child pairs from Bar Harbor, Mount Desert, Tremont, Trenton and Cranberry Isles participated in the program. It was wonderful to see so many adults and kids sharing their love of reading with one another!

Events leading up to Gary's presentation at the Northeast Harbor Library included Bentley rides at the Seal Cove Auto Museum (the car plays an important role in the book) and book discussions at the Southwest Harbor Public Library and Northeast Harbor Public Library.

On the day of Gary's visit, an English butler (just like Mr. Bowles-Fitzpatrick) served tea and biscuits to the audience.
