Spread the Word!
Friends Over Books has an awesome
collection of good reads.
Books on Mexico, Performing Arts and a visit from two-time Newbery and Printz Prize winning author Gary Schmidt headlined the Friends Over Books program on Swan’s Island and Mount Desert Island this summer.
Swan’s Island: The program kicked off at 10:30 a.m. on July 5, at the Swans Island Library with an orientation for readers between the ages of 9 and 14. Parents were welcomed too! Friends Over Books volunteers greeted participants and reviewed the great books and exciting experiences that were planned for the sumer.
On Tuesday all participants were given a free copy of Okay For Now by Gary Schmidt to read. The book was read by Monday, July 18 when the group gathered for a discussion before meeting with the author on Monday, July 25 at 10:30 a.m. All meetings were held at the library.
Kids on Mount Desert Island read the book too. Their schedule was a bit different, only Okay For Now was read. All discussions were held in local libraries and the author met on July 25 with all readers at the Northeast Harbor Library.
In August, readers on Swan’s Island were introduced to a series of books on Mexico and Latin America. Readers then spent time reading and exploring through related projects and activities the tradition, customs, and immigration policies of our neighbors to the south.
Readers also had a chance to discover what it means to be a performer: dancer, writer and actor, through various readings and book related activities on Performing Arts. The book War Horse was introduced as an outstanding example of a story adapted for Broadway by using puppets.
