Take one author, add plenty of kids and what do you get? Magic!
“Working with the author and the illustrator enhanced children’s ability to write…and they did some awesome illustrations.”
“Our trophy case is not just for basketball, we have signed copies of posters and books from visiting authors, which we proudly display.”
These are just some of the things teachers, principals and authors are saying about IRW’s Island Book and author program. Watch the videos below.
From Kimberly Ridley:
“Each time I tossed the students a new writing prompt, they dove right in, frolicking the in the bright currents of their imaginations. They emerged with shining words, giving shape to what they learned about the small, wild lives that surround us.”
“Do such experiences make a lasting difference? None of us ever knows precisely when, how, or if we touch others’ lives. I can, however, say this: something happened in the elementary school classrooms I’ve had the privilege of visiting. I saw it on students’ faces as they shared their stories and drawings with their classmates: the dignity and sense of accomplishment that comes from creating something new.”
From Stephen Costanza:
Just a note here to say how grateful I am to have had the pleasure of working with you and your great organization! I’m extremely fortunate to have met the students and teachers of Milbridge and Machiasport. Sharing art and music with them was to experience a joy that simply doesn’t happen everyday.
Of course none of this would have been possible without IRW. Everything about my experience – from our initial contact and planning, right up to the presentations at school, was smooth and supportive! What more could an author/illustrator ask for?
There must be an incredible amount of work that goes on behind the scenes at IRW. Add to that a great personnel, and you have a top-notch organization whose service to Maine kids and their communities cannot be underestimated.
My visits have inspired me to finish some book projects on the back burner. I do hope we will collaborate again. Many, many thanks!
