IRW Presents: Professional Development Series 2024! Join us for a series of workshops inspired by our 2023 Dear Teacher conference. Resources and a certificate for one contact hour will be distributed after the session via email.

About this Workshop

We firmly believe that picture books are for everyone! Picture books are full of rich vocabulary words, illustrations that sharpen visual literacy and observation skills, and can be an accessible way to learn about a range of subjects—or share a beloved story. They also serve as an inclusive way to bring together multigrade classrooms, classrooms where students have a wide range of reading abilities, or to keep learning fun. Learn more about why picture books are essential to include in middle school collections, and some tips and tricks to exploring them in deep and meaningful ways with readers ages 11 and up.

About Alex

Alexandra Hinrichs is an award-winning author of fiction and nonfiction picture books. Her titles include The Pocket Book, The Lobster Lady, I am Made of Mountains, The Traveling Camera, and Therese Makes a Tapestry. She earned two MAs in Library & Information Studies and United States History at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2011. She has experience working in school, public, academic, and corporate libraries, as well as in a children’s bookstore. For the past three years she has been the Library Information Specialist at Leonard Middle School in Old Town, Maine. When she isn’t deep in books, you can find her chasing, baking, or hiking with her three wild sons and two tame cats (although the cats skip the hikes and, when possible, the chases).
