Join Island Readers & Writers in the Thuya Garden in Northeast Harbor, ME on Wednesday, July 20, from 2:00–4:00pm and be transported to the world of Celia Planted a Garden!
Celia Thaxter (1835–1894) was an artist, gardener, and poet who lived much of her life on Appledore Island, ME where she first began planting and tending an incredible garden as a child. Celia is also the subject of Celia Planted a Garden, a new picture book by Gary D. Schmidt and Phyllis Root, illustrated by Melissa Sweet.
In this program, we’ll tour the Thuya Garden to learn about the design and cultivation of the gardens, write poetry inspired by the flora and fauna we observe, and make art with much-acclaimed illustrator Melissa Sweet herself! This program is recommended for children ages 8–12.
Each participant will receive a signed copy of Celia Planted a Garden.

This is a collaborative program between Island Readers & Writers, the Land and Garden Preserve, and the Southwest Harbor Public Library.
