Belief Statement

To inspire a passion for reading and learning among children
living in remote coastal island and ‘inland’ island communities.

We believe:

that every child matters & in the promise that lies within every child—their capacities and their dreams

in the essential role of reading in the healthy development of children

in the power of literature to stretch imaginations, foster curiosity, develop creative and reflective thinking skills, and expand perspectives

that every island and “inland” island community is distinctive and that our work must be customized to meet the needs and interests of the children and communities we serve

Goals:

Reduce the educational opportunity gap for children living in remote and under-resourced communities.

Help children grow in their awareness of self, their community, and the world around them through reading and hands-on experiences.

Empower children to find their own voice/self expression through the sharing of their ideas, their curiosity and their innovation.

Support school teachers and leaders in their efforts to provide quality learning experiences for their students through the thoughtful development of literature-based programs that integrate a books’ content across subject areas, grades and in community.

Draw out the inimitable strengths of place and help children deepen their appreciation of their irreplaceable worth and beauty.

Help grow active lifelong learners and caring responsible citizens.
